I am not asking for specific numbers of any production plant. I want to know the general direct worker/employee ratio of a plant.

Example: if there are 1000 employees working usually 700 of them are direct workers etc.

I am looking for estimates backed up with sources or personal experience.
Also there may be multiple shifts in a production plant so I am looking for the ratio in a single shift since all the jobs may not get a night shift.

Direct worker means a worker directly working on the production line while employee means all the the people getting paid in that plant.

  • What country are you in? Also, what is a "direct worker"? A contractor?

  • @DavidK I explained the "direct worker" as a person working in the production/assembly line in the plant. Since I am not looking for a specific plant's statistics I prefer if this was not country related. People who have worked in an automotive plant should be able to give a number.

  • This doubtless depends on the individual plant. I work in manufacturing, and only relatively few people work on the shop floor, due to extensive automation and the use of CNC (computer numerical controlled) machines. To do in 1980 what we do now would require far more people working with machines, if it could be done at all.

  • "I am looking for estimates backed up with sources" - Perhaps consulting a professional study on the field would yield better answers, instead of estimates or wild guesses from single persons.
