I'm working as a software developer and I'm really happy with my current job. However, I will need to move to my hometown soon for personal reasons, so I have begun to apply for jobs in the area.

One company I applied to is one I've been interested in working for for a long time. But in the process of applying, I've become quite disillusioned with them. There are various articles on employer review sites and in the press that claim that working conditions have deteriorated a lot recently. Then the application process was very anonymous and consisted of me entering my CV on their website, and them sending me a curt e-mail with an invitation to an on-site interview (300 miles from where I live!) and no other information. I initially agreed, but I was home sick that week and couldn't come. Now I'm busy catching up at work and can't just take a vacation day in the middle of the week, as the company I applied to demands.

I've become quite cold about the idea of working there, but there aren't that many possible employers in my hometown, so I don't want to completely burn that bridge. I'm also still interested in doing the job that they advertised, just the application process and the alleged problems with the working conditions are very unappealing.

I think the best option at this point is to try my luck elsewhere, so, how can I back out of this application without gong straight to the rejection bin if I decide to apply again later?
