I'm about 4 years out of school and I'm just not loving software engineering (at least in the area in which I've studied - embedded software and electrical engineering). I loved it in school, graduated at the top of my class, but the workplace is much different. Over 4 different jobs/internships, I think I've given it a fair enough shot to say it's not for me. There's just too much corporate bureaucracy for my liking. I've credited my dislike for the field on the people I worked with the first few times. But this time, I'm working with good people and I still hate it. I'm writing this from work to be honest because I have absolutely no work to do (I've finished it all), the job doesn't challenge me, it's so far behind in terms of technology and at this point I just want away from embedded development all together. I'm not learning, I'm honestly a task-rabbit still after 10-months of working here. I want work that's meaningful. I feel like I'm getting rusty staying here and I don't think there's many embedded software companies out there in the NY tri-state area (not opposed to moving though) that are on the cutting-edge, the industry seems to lag behind academia in almost every way imaginable.
Unfortunately, there's so much out there that I can't really figure out how I can transition into a new field. My requirements are:
- 100% Remote work
- Ample travel opportunities
- Minimal interference from bureaucracy
- The freedom to be creative
- I have opportunities to learn and stay relevant
- something where I feel like I'm actually contribting
I hate it so much that I even went and got my real-estate license, so I'm not opposed to doing a full 180. I've looked into copy-writing, technical writing, fintech, and my ultimate goal of entrepreneurship. The problem of course with the last one is I feel like I'm in such a tight bubble now that I can't even think of new ideas because I'm in the same boring routine day in and day out. I'm not stretching myself and I feel like there's little opportunity to do so.
I've spoken to my boss already on several occasions about how I'm concerned about staying relevant and I'm not feeling challenged (the biggest challenge for me is setting up the toolchain because it's a mess, not the actual writing of the software). His answer was simply "it is what it is," which is totally unacceptable to me.
And again, at this point, my view of the field is so tainted that I'm not even considering giving it another chance, I need something totally different.
My interests, as of today have been:
* fintech
* travel and hospitality
* automation
* fitness, to a lesser degree
Unfortunately, my skillset is so narrow and my interests now are so vastly different than 8 years ago when I chose my major, I'm not sure how I can make a transition. Any help is greatly appreciated.

You should become a freelancer. That way you can pick and choose only those gigs that meet all of your many requirements. You might want to work through an agency until your professional reputation is well-established. Good luck.
