I have never played Xenoblade Chronicles, but seeing recent trailers it's a series I'd like to get into. I already know that Xenoblade Chronicles X is totally unconnected to the others, so in asking what order to play the games in I'm really asking two things:
- Must I play the original Xenoblade Chronicles before playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2? (Will playing them in the wrong order mean I will get spoilers for Xenoblade Chronicles, or feel confused about Xenoblade Chronicles 2?)
- As "Torna: The Golden Country" is set before Xenoblade Chronicles 2, but was released afterwards, should I play it before or after Xenoblade Chronicles 2? (Will I get spoilers for Xenoblade Chronicles 2 if I play "Torna: The Golden Country" first?)
No spoilers (or at least spoiler tags) in answers please :) I have already been spoiled on at least one plot point :(

- All three games are completely separate stories and games that happen to share some similarities in terms of races and items and so on. The series is very similar to Final Fantasy in that regard. Without going into spoiler territory, the games do sometimes reference each other, but not in any significant way. You can play the games in any order or not at all.
- XC2 and its DLC were written such that you'd play the main game first, as the Torna DLC wasn't even available until a few days ago. Playing the DLC second is recommended.
Agreed. Definitely don't start with the Torna DLC, play XC2 first. Other than that, doesn't really matter.
