I am an international undergraduate student in Computer Science at a top research university in the US. I will be graduating this Fall, 3 semesters earlier than expected, and I fully plan to continue directly onto graduate school. However, since most graduate schools in this field admit for Fall, I will be out of school during the Spring and Summer of 2019, during which time I would like to work as a Software Engineer.

Now due to the limited timeframe for this employment (i.e. I would know that I'd be quitting in 8 months when I begin in January) I thought internships would be a better choice for me. However, looking at a number of internship postings, these all require me to be enrolled in school during the internship, which I will not be. I have written to a number of companies for an exception and received largely negative responses.

In this case, is it a good idea for me to apply for full-time positions, and quit when it's time to start graduate school? How bad would that look on my resume, and are there any negative consequences for doing so?

Also, is it a bad idea to apply for internships and full-time jobs at the same time? If qualified for internships, I would really prefer to do that instead of a full-time job.

Thanks!

  • @paparazzo how does one find contract work? I would also much rather work at the employer's office / etc., is that a thing with contract work? I'm not sure how well working as a contractor would work out with OPT employment requirements, so I'm more interested in internships or fulltime.
