I've been seeing a urologist for about six months now and have decided to enhance my penis through an out-patient surgical procedure that will require two weeks off from work to recover.

How should I tell my boss about this? If it matters, my boss is a woman.

We have a great professional relationship, so on the one hand I feel that being straightforward about the procedure I am having is fine, but on the other hand I am concerned about being judged harshly for such a medical procedure that's sometimes considered "cosmetic". However, for me it is not merely for cosmetic reasons; I have a "micro-penis", and my urologist has been supportive of my decision to make my penis larger.

I appreciate your openness on this topic. However, even as a fellow male, I feel that level of detail you've shared is very personal. Your manager should know not to press for too much personal detail and you certainly don't have to feel like you need to offer that much detail. When I managed people, I keep a really open minded and am not offended by personal details if my direct report felt like they needed someone to talk to.

          I would start with:

Hi [manager's name], I would like to formally request for 2 weeks off [insert dates] to recover from surgery.

If necessary to get the time off, you can provide a doctor's note indicating you're having surgery. The doctor should not disclose what type of surgery/procedure you're having.
