What does a .dmg verify?

Whenever I open a .dmg, my computer says that it is Verifying… for a moment. I'm just curious as to what it is doing at this time. Is it running a checksum, checking if it is the same as the online version, etc.?

In most cases, it's just running a checksum—making sure the app didn't get corrupted or something. In some cases, it may also be checking a digital signature, I'm not sure if devs have the option of signing DMG's. It's NOT verifying anything from the internet.

  • @Wowfunhappy disk images can be signed and this is part of the verifying stage. Please add an answer with your comment; it is correct.

In most cases, your computer is just doing a checksum, to make sure the DMG hasn't been corrupted due to a flakey network connection or hard drive, or from bit-rot, etc. This can let you know about a problem early on, so you don't waste time troubleshooting a bad copy of an app.

This checksumming stage is why I really like storing applications inside of DMG's, as opposed to just using zip files.

Developers also have the ability to codesign DMG's (thanks @graham-miln), in which case, this signature will also be verified.
