I am experiencing a similar issue. I am from a different background and culture where everything start from a greeting. Actually it is consider offensive to start talking to someone (even a stranger) without initiating some type of greeting first.
When I relocated to the USA 12 years ago I learnt otherwise. But it was still bearable until I got a Job with VoIP/telecom company. I work as a customer support Engineer but in my branch we have Network Engineer, programmer , business analyst etc. My team is Ok but the other team to the exception of few individuals are notorious for avoid any type of politeness. I went from surprised to frustrated to angry to sad to now I don't give the "curse word". This people act like they hate me. I am from African descent so at first I thought It was race thing(maybe a little bit) but I have seen them interact with another Black guy in their team. I tried to greet them even if they are looking away , tried to make eye contact and smile, to break ice with a compliment or a joke. They answer me but the next day they are back to their normal self. The worst experience was when one of them had to actually climbed back the stairs just to avoid to cross path with me in the hallway. That day I could help it; I burst in laughter so loud that I ma sure he must have noticed. Yeah that was pretty funny.

I an getting used to them and their ways. But don't get me wrong I would take the first equal paying job to break way from this mean environment.
Mu advice is if you can not beat them, join them. Just find one or two people you connect with and build an ice wall between you and the other one unless it is job related.
