There is a large island populated entirely by women. Men are not allowed on the island, and are killed or taken prisoner if they attempt to land. These females train to be warriors from the day they can walk, mastering numerous weapons and fighting styles. While they are all experienced fighters, they are all normal people and don't possess super powers. Despite this, they have managed to avoid being conquered by other countries and have survived as a nation for a millennia into the modern age. This nation has outlived many great empires while existing in the open, and their sovereignty is respected today.

These women can only give birth to girls. As part of their initiation ceremony into womanhood, They are required to leave the island and conceive a child with a male. They return to the island afterwards to have their child, fulfilling their duty of creating the next generation of amazons.

How could this island of women have managed to maintain their borders and sovereignty for this long without being conquered?

It couldn't. As a bonus, if they have only one child they will eventually become extinct because the population can only decrease due to diseases, accidents, famines, wars and other such events. As a second bonus, eventually the women of surrounding countries will become tired of their men's affairs with foreigners and will demand their reduction.

The island is home to a plant whose pollen and sap are deadly poison to men. The estrogen in the Amazon women's bodies protects them from the poison. Furthermore, the same genetic anomaly which keeps them from conceiving male babies also causes most their female embryos to split into identical twins or triplets during conception, which more than offsets the population loss from accident and injury.

  • Excellent idea +1. Interestingly, in less advanced times it is unlikely that the "men die" mechanism could be explained. It is only in modern times that the technology would exist to identify the plant and its effects, but the rulers would presumably make it a priority to prevent study by outsiders and ensure the knowledge does not leave the island. It also creates a threat to the surrounding nations if the plant were introduced into other countries.

The neighboring country thinks they are great.

When the Amazons leave to conceive they almost always wind up in the same country on the mainland. The occasional arrival of warrior women looking to hook up is a matter of local legend in this country, and is celebrated in their culture with songs, stories and other festivities. It is a rite of manhood for teenaged boys if their first time can be with a visiting Amazon virgin. This has been going on for hundreds of years.

The rulers of this country think that is fine just as is. They don't want to ruin it by going and fighting the warrior women, or messing up their ways or anything else. Even if they did try that, there would be a lot of public sentiment against it.

The result: they do not know it, but the Amazon nation is a de facto protectorate of the large country on the continent. Other countries might feel less protective of the Amazons but they do not want to have to deal with their protectors.

              They're Just Really Bad-ass

When you have a military super power next door guess what you do? You do what what Canada does and become super polite and mild mannered, that's what. These bad-ass warrior chicks can, will, and have totally obliterated aggressors in the past. The show up, you give them what they want, and you thank whatever gods your sissy butt prays to that they left peacefully. Hell, if its medieval equivalent times you probably pay them tribute not to attack you. Kinda like the french, who started their long tradition of surrendering to everybody by paying the vikings to stop sacking paris every other tuesday, or the mongols who proved that a land invasion can work in Russia if you are simply brutally crazy enough. The Mongols collected tribute from them for almost a century. Tribute to Amazonia is in the form of healthy breeding afe males, whom they drag off never to be seen again. Probably getting laid a ton and loving life. Don't worry about it. don't ask questions. just give em what they want.
