I'm in an extremely tight situation currently with my work and school life.
Before I explain further, some answers I'd like to hear involve others' experiences with jobs in IT and programming upon graduation and what was done for a paycheck while still in school.
The long story can be boiled down to a few important details.
- I've been involved in a family business that unfortunately, due to bad luck and mismanagement, is failing and may not be around much longer. It's a small business with about 6 employees (too few) which has created a huge burden of responsibility for me.
- I'm essentially the IT director of this business, having developed from scratch an interactive ordering/tracking website for our clients. In addition, I created desktop software for internal use in interacting with the orders placed on the website. I'm only 22 years old and I believe I have quite a bit more programming experience, as well as business experience, from these projects as compared to my classmates.
- Having a sort of obligation to help the business through dire straits, has slowed down my progress on my IT degree. Up until this semester, I'd been taking 12 credits to leave room for work projects. Many of my friends in the same field have graduated, gotten jobs and moved out on their own while I'm still living with my family. As of right now, I won't be on track to graduate until the end of Summer 2019.
- I make very little money from this job and because of the long hours, and the fact that I'm combining it with school, has damaged a medium-distance relationship which I truly do not want to end because of this.
Essentially what I want to know is if this business fails within the coming months before I can graduate and go off on my own, what relevant work can I get in the meantime to pay my own bills? I feel that many tech companies either want you full-time or not at all. With only one prior tech internship under my belt before I started with the family business four years ago, what can I do to convince a company to allow me to work part-time remotely? With my experience and age, should I skip internships?
EDIT:
I have already applied to several internship programs for the summer in the hopes that they pay decently (based on a friend's experience) and that it will lead to a full-time position later.
