What is the most effective way to respond to illegal interview questions both on and offline?

When interviewers ask personal questions that violate federal and state laws, what is the best way to respond besides stating the obvious? I would feel that if I stated that the question was illegal, that I would hurt my chances of getting such a job, not even sure if I would accept such a job if it was offered due to unprofessionalism. Sometimes interviewers do ask illegal personal questions about your marital status and if you plan on having children. How about if this happens during an online interview rather than an offline interview? I once participated in an online interview where questions were submitted to me through a website. Illegal questions were not only violating federal and state laws, but were also violating the terms of service on the website. I was younger and inexperienced at the time and naively responded to such a question with the response that the question violated not only state and federal law, but the terms of service of the website. That was the end of that. Moving forward, what is the most effective way to respond to such questions?
