How much of an achievement is a merit of the CEO?

I often read that the achievements of a company were possible mainly thanks to the CEO.
When a big company increases dramatically its revenue, it is said that it was thanks to its CEO.



So, I was wondering, is it really so impactful the role of the CEO? I know that he is the one who leads the company and chose the best course of actions for the company. So it is, of course, an important role.



But how can the articles cite only the CEO when the company achieves great things and not all the employees that made it possible?
In my opinion, it is thanks to the people that worked on the project that the project had been successful. Moreover, especially in big companies, the CEO simply cannot watch over all of the thousands of employees of the company.



So, how much of the achievements can be said to be thanks to the CEO when he cannot even control how the people below him operate? I mean, he has no means to correct or watch over how the employees are working.
