I am switching jobs from my existing employer in California (CA) to another employer in New York City (NYC) in November last week. My family is covered under medical insurance plan from my current employer till the end of November. My spouse is also employed in CA and plans to relocate to NYC after few months. I will enroll my family in the medical plan that is applicable to NY state.

We have a month gap (Dec 2018) that we need to have medical insurance for. Which of these alternatives is the best option for us:

(1) use 'special enrollment' to continue coverage with the "loss of coverage" option citing my job resignation here in CA

(2) use 'open enrollment' with my spouse's employer plan which is effective from Jan 1,2019 and use COBRA to have the continuity of coverage from my current employer. I am aware that I need to pay more premium for the month of Dec and do heavy paper work.

Or are there any other options that I can explore. Any inputs will be highly appreciated.
