Is it possible to negotiate the postdoctoral salary there? Has anyone negotiated a postdoctoral fellowship in Ecole Polytechnique in France? If yes, by how much?
Quite likely (this is the same exact term the professor used in his email when I asked him about the decision) I’ll be offered a postdoc fellowship there, with the net salary of 2450€/month. I’m in my 3rd year of postdoc, and my current net US salary is $2971/month. And USD and EUR are not all that different these days. I know the US and French economies aren’t the same, but can I negotiate, as I’m senior postdoc and my current salary is significantly higher?

I'm having a Skype session with my next potential employer this Tuesday.

It doesn't hurt to ask, but I suspect he'll just laugh. That's $2732 as of today, BTW.

Ecole Polytechnique is definitively a military school, belonging to the ministère de la Defense. It's also the best in terms of reputation in France. So go there if you can, it will massively boost your career if you plan to begin it in a French corporation, but I'm pretty sure the status things - like the salary - are not to be negotiated.

Ah, and something not related to my previous comment : the massive medical and jobless insurances are to be added to that(as it's not counted in the net), as well as the retirement elements(that are rather good as well). For 2450€ net, expect that the total cost for the employer will be around 4600€. The difference is delayed income(pension, insurances...)

@Mathmath : I have worked as Software Engineer in Ecole Polytechnique for three years. I remember that I was not able to negotiate my salary even though I had previous experience in other companies. It was probably specific to this job... Still, I hope that you get the job. What will the postdoc be about ?

@Mathmath : It's great that you got the job. Did they accept to raise your salary given your previous experience as a post-doc ? If you are currently a post-doc, will you prematurely end your current position for the new one ? Anyway, good for you !
