Our team at our company has recently grown to nearly 20 employees, and I'd like to have a social gathering with beer once a month, either on the first Friday or last Friday of every month. Which would be better?

The first Friday would give a good start to every new month, but a last Friday would also leave us with something to look forward to every month.

This is kind of a psychological business question as I would like the team to feel that their efforts are appreciated while also staying motivated to remain productive for the duration of the month.

Why don’t you poll your team to find out which they’d prefer?

  • I am asking them also but would like to know if anyone with managerial experience has an opinion and what would be better for the team.

Someone with managerial experience would probably say it completely depends on the team. But they would also recommend making sure the activity is inclusive enough for non-drinkers, parents with small children, and introverts, since if you don't have any of those on your team now, you will eventually.

I can't see how it could possibly make any difference at all. Maybe I'm missing something.

  • @LeoGalleguillos I think you should have both. Think of a sports event or campaign. Usually there are "Kickoff" activities to start the week/month. Then in the middle of the week/month there needs to be "Reflection" or "Hang In There" kind of stuff. Then at the end of the month, the "Finale/Celebration". Humans tend to have a need for a cyclical understanding of linear (and non-linear) situations.
